Commando Rabbits bring home the Goods (yeah!)

Commando Rabbits

Fresh from the Intel contest, we decided to sink our teeth into another competition (we just love our art contests!) and this time it’s organised by the game site Destructoid. The loot is the Overgrowth/Natural Selection 2 pre-order pack, which is a special double offering of games developed by indie developers, Wolfire Games and Unknown Worlds. The theme of the contest was simple, draw (or photoshop) rabbits carrying out acts of violence on aliens. What? How could anyone possibly do such a thing? Now, we couldn’t bring ourselves to draw cute cuddly creatures ‘Aliens vs. Predator’-style, but we could imagine them doing a great ‘Rambo’ impersonation. So we had them redrawn as commando rabbits, complete with camo suit, headbands, bullets and all. We liked our finished product, and apparently so did the judge! Which means of course, good news for us. We get ourselves a couple of high quality games for free! And ain’t that just the best thing?

A ‘Core’-avant 2010!

Looks powerful, doesn't it? Click to enlarge...

Hello 2010! It’s a brand new year, ushering in new resolutions (for those who’ve made them) and, hopefully, a new zest after a decade of life in the 21st century. Those ten years sure flew by pretty quickly! As for us, it’s business as usual, and we kick things off with a sweet poster design contest organised by Intel Malaysia, to celebrate the launch of their new PC processor range. We put in a zesty and ‘glowing’ submission entitled “Overdrive!” to symbolise our core (which is, by the way, the contest theme) because we’re always in high gear! Not that we’re energizer bunnies or anything, but let’s just say we keep our aspirations pretty high. That’s the ‘core’ of Qoravant, after all!

More Monkey Island Mischief!

Things can sometimes get a little hectic around here, and when the stress level is on the high end of the Richter scale, there’s nothing better than to take a short break with our current favourite point-and-click adventure game, Tales of Monkey Island (or ToMI, for short). Now in its fourth and penultimate episode, the exploits of Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate TM, and his quest to save his buccaneering wife, Elaine, has reached a cliffhanger of an ending, and honestly, we can’t wait for the final installment! With the game still fresh on our minds, we took part in a Halloween contest organised by Telltale Games, the publisher of ToMI, and put our spin on Guybrush and another well-known icon of comicdom, the hyperkinetic, rabbit-like lagomorph Max, from the popular ‘Sam & Max’ franchise created by Steve Purcell. Click on the picture above to see our final product. Making 3D pictures has never been so much fun!

What’s this about water bottles?

Everyone needs to drink water. Period. Whether you’re at home, at work or at the gym, nothing beats a refreshing gulp of that good ol’ H20 (we like it chilled). And what if you’re on the go? Easy! Just grab a bottled one from your nearest all-day outlet, in your choice of tap, mineral, distilled, reverse osmosis or oxygenated flavours. Problem is though, that plastic bottle you’re holding isn’t bio-degradable, and when there’s billions of them being tossed away, you know that ain’t good for mother earth. So what do you do about it? Well, Sigg, the renowned aluminium water bottle maker, holds an annual contest every year, encouraging entrants to illustrate through graphic design, awareness of plastic bottles and how we should avoid using them. Our entry for 2009 depicts our dependency on water, and its relation to all life on this planet, and how we’re all connected through this precious commodity that we so often take for granted.

Let’s do our bit and start using our own water bottles (we hear aluminium and stainless steel ones are better for you). You don’t need a Sigg to do that.

A SCUMM for a Monkey

He's a badass biker, but looks can be deceiving. Hmmm...

He's a badass biker, but looks can be deceiving... *click on that jaw!*

Hello again, world! It’s October (and coming to the end of it) and let’s just say September flew by without us even noticing it! That’s because we’ve always got our noses pressed against the monitor, among other things, and work takes centre-stage here at Qoravant. Of course, there’s always time for a break, and that means the gym, reading mags, watching movies, and playing computer games. What kind of games do you ask? Well, a long time favourite is the cult-status LucasArts game, Full Throttle, a point-and-click adventure based on the SCUMM engine that is the backbone of other great games like Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, and Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis.

Most recently, we’ve had a chance to contribute our own Full Throttle artwork to the SCUMM universe through a contest hosted by the Dtoid Artisans Group and sponsored by Telltale Games, and came away with a prize of the all-new Tales of Monkey Island game series! We’re positively ecstatic! Anyone who wants to see more fabulous art by SCUMM fans can direct their browsers to the contest winners post. Here’s hoping there’s more competitions like these in future, ‘cos frankly, we love winning games. Literally.

Optimus Prime – Qoravant Style

After two blockbuster movies in two years courtesy of Messrs Michael Bay & Co, the world now knows of the Transformers, the story of the epic battle between the good Autobots and the evil Decepticons. Of course, those among us humans who have followed the TV cartoon series and toys since the early eighties would’ve noticed the dramatic re-envisioning of these robots-in-disguise…and what a change it was! We here at Qoravant have always had a soft-spot for good-ol’ Optimus Prime, the Autobots’ distinguished leader, though to be honest, we’re not a big fan of his latest reincarnation on the big screen. So with that in mind, we photographed our beloved 20th-anniversary Optimus fully-poseable figure (by Hasbro, of course!), ran him through the machine, and presto! Optimus Prime version 1984 updated for 2009… Qoravant style!
